[Syrupmakers] Rebuild of a Chattnooga no. 12 cane mill

Some great suggestions.  A few more:
You may be able to get "Food Grade" paint or "Food Grade" powder coat.  We use the food grade grease.
As far as the bearings are concerned, I ran into a machine shop in Jesup, GA where the guy will make bearings.  He has made brass bearings and also aluminum.  A family friend also had a suggestion of another alloy that may be suitable.  If someone wants, I can contact my friend and ask him to contact his cousin to find out what alloy.
I may be near Jesup, GA and can find out if the machine shop is still in business.  I had a business card around here somewhere and will post it if I can find it.

You can also have bearings machined out of Delrin which is an oil impregnated plastic I was leery of those at first but they seem to work really well

Jerry,      They have to be trimmed to fit at a machine shop, usually. Not too expensive. Lasts a LONG time. Not so hazardous as lead.                      Richard It is really more of a sleeve, I guess.

Subject: Re: [Syrupmakers] Rebuild of a Chattnooga no. 12 cane mill       I went to a local nut and bolt warehouse and replaced all hardware with new including set bolts. I also sand blasted everything and primed and painted parts. I used food grade grease for the gears. There's a place in NC you can order lead free Babbitt to pore the barrings. Other then that these mills are very simple and don't have to many parts.     Have Fun!! If you need anything let me know!!        Hello all, I am new to the list and have been growing cane to make syrup for the last two years, (on a a small scale for myself). Other people have milled my cane for me the last two years. But, I just bought a cane mill for myself and it is in good shape.     No cracks or welds and all the pieces are there except the two roller caps on the top plate. I guess I will have to get those made by a local blacksmith. Anyway, I was wanting to know if there is anyone near to the Tallahassee area that could provide me with some guidance on how the cane mill should be refurbished. I have started taking it apart and it all looks good. So, I may need assistance with that or maybe parts. I plan on cleaning the outer parts and repainting them back to the old redish color? Thanks up front and I would appreciate any and all advice on this rebuild. Best Regards, Claude
