[Syrupmakers] when to plant

We are in Guyton, GA and I don't think my friends who grow cane lose any due to frost.  I think they bank the cane and plant in the spring.  They harvest in the fall.  They also leave the roots in the ground and the cane plants produce nicely for about three years.  When the production slows, they plow up the field and replant.

If I remember correctly, it is a three or four year cycle.  Other things we have learned?  The cane grows better in a field with a lot of sun, no shade from being too close to the woods.

I know several that live West of Statesboro who also grow cane.  He prefers to bank his cane in the ground during the winter - it keeps it from freezing and from drying out.

Monty, we are about 50 miles inland from Savannah, Ga.  There have been years when we have planted in the fall and done ok.  Last year I planted some in October and, with the hard winter,  I lost most all of the cane.  We have done best over years banking the cane then planting after the danger of freeze.  I guess it comes down to what works best individually???
