again you have not said if it is a 2 cyl. engine but from the 1944
date it must be, These engines, if equipped with magneto ignition,
as most were, actually delivered an impulse every half revolution
and will run, if poorly, when timed from the wrong side. Due to the
plug wires being adjacent and not quite a full rotation apart if
improperly set one cylinder will be fireing late or early. neither
condition will generate a smooth and full power delivery. At least
from my experience with 2 cyl. J D engines on Mod A, B and GP farm
tractors. These Engines had a timing mark on the crankcase casting
and the flywheels were marked for left hand impulse and left hand
exhaust. The flywheel was on the left side of the crosswise mounted
engine.<br>

says it's the front plug (radiator end) and one that says
it's the back plug (flywheel end) to be sure someone has it in
writing, or illustrated somewhere. I have the motor running
now using the front cylinder as #1 but it is not cranking as

were used in early John Deere # 12 A combines, and other
applications. I have one on a large rex cement mixer and one
on a chatt. 45 cane mill. Both motors are 1944's. Thanks for
