Scott, here is a link that might help. I have never had an aphid problem in my cane (Missouri), but I use DE almost exclusively for pest control in my garden, and I also grow organically.

I have 2 varieties Dale and Della. I have buckwheat surrounding them. Plants are very healthy. I have lady bugs and other beneficials but they can't keep up. 
I also say no to the insecticides.
