in reply to gears for a vertical mill, the best way to go is to get a gearbox off of a old square hay baler.  A tractor running slightly above an idle runs it at a good speed.  I have a mill set up with one and I like it best.  I have used a post hole digger,  but you will find they run too fast, and sling juices out of the mill one the feed side,  and don't allow the juice to run down the extraction roller fully before expelling the scraps, which mixes juice back in with them.  I have a mill set up with an old transmission and rear end from a car that works pretty well,  but nothing is better than a baler gearbox for hoking it to a tractor pto.  You will already have a slip clutch on the flywheel,  which is very handy,  and you,ll already have the shaft.  All you will have to do is make a sleeve to weld onto the spindle on the gearbox, and bolt it to the shaft coming out of the top of the mill,  and fix a frame to support it.
